DIRECTOR OF PROCESS SAFETY

“I think everyone wants to have a purpose in what they’re doing, a purpose in their life, whether that’s work or home. And for me? I found mine in process safety.”

You’re not potentially impacting just one person, you could be impacting a large number of people or even a community.”

Dawn’s passion is palpable, whether focused on work, time spent with her family or in her creative endeavors. She enjoys photography, recently snapping her daughter’s senior portraits, and her masterful watercolor skills are evident by the intricate Moose painting on her office wall. “It’s the perfect hobby for an engineer,” Dawn explains. “With watercolor you can’t add white, so every step has to be thought of ahead of time.”

This ability to think five, ten steps ahead guides others to describe Dawn as “intuitive,” as she generates new methods to communicate the importance of process safety. Adorning the walls of the Flint Hills Resources Pine Bend facility in Rosemount, Minnesota, posters and banners designed by Dawn and featuring graphics she created express the inherent risks of working in a refinery and the importance of stopping a job if something doesn’t look, smell or feel right, reminders to “keep it in the pipes.”

“She has an immense amount of passion. Anybody she talks to can’t help but catch it because she’s so passionate about it.”

“These are folks I see at the grocery store, my kids babysit their kids,” she says. “If an event happens where something gets out of the pipes and impacts a person, that’s failure in my book.”

For Dawn, it’s about people, and her goals extend far beyond Flint Hills Resources. She encourages peers around the world to rally around process safety, communicating the lessons learned when unfortunate incidents occur to learn why they happened and to prevent the same incidents from happening again. “At the end of every day, I want to have everybody coming home safe. And that vision doesn’t change – ever.”
